The goal is to stimulate an active and ongoing discussion around the use of both historic and future climate datasets in energy system analysis<\/p>\n<p>Building on the success of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-energy\/next-generation-challenges-workshop\/outputs\/\">last year&#8217;s workshop<\/a>, the 2021 edition of the NextGenEC workshop addressed five key themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making the most of limited meteorological predictability for energy<\/li>\n<li>Climate uncertainty and power system planning<\/li>\n<li>Definition and assessment of weather stress events for energy<\/li>\n<li>Added value of subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting for energy<\/li>\n<li>Renewable energy and research into developing markets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A detailed description of these themes is available <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-energy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2021\/07\/NextGen2021_themes.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop attracted over 129 participants (from 250 registrations) from around the world, spanning a wide range of research interests from energy and climate science. There remain, however, many scientific and technical questions to be addressed in order to fully understand climate risk in power systems (e.g., open-access article <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1175\/BAMS-D-20-0256.1\">here<\/a>, list of\u00a0links to background resources <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-energy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2021\/08\/energymet_education_videos.pdf\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 edition of NextGenEC focusses on the topic \u2013 \u201cClimate and Energy Systems: Foresight days to decades ahead\u201d \u2013 will focus discussion and presentations around 5 overlapping themes:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Making the most of limited meteorological predictability for energy<br \/>\n\u2022 Climate uncertainty and power system planning<br \/>\n\u2022 Definition and assessment of weather stress events for energy<br \/>\n\u2022 Added value of subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting for energy<br \/>\n\u2022 Renewable energy and research into the developing markets<\/p>\n<p>Participants were invited to present their own research and engage in working group discussions addressing these themes.
