With increasing renewable generation, exposure of infrastructure assets and evolving energy demand, the need for weather and climate resilient energy systems has never been greater.   At the same time, weather and climate science is progressing: from the emergence of skillful AI prediction systems and advances in downscaling, to the use of very large climate ensembles and decadal forecasts to understand climate risk.<\/p>\n<p>This fast-moving landscape presents both opportunities and challenges for \u2018energy-climate\u2019 research.  Since its first edition in 2020, the vision of NextGenEC has been to draw together researchers from the energy- and climate- sciences, highlighting the \u2018state of the art\u2019 and forging links across disciplines to explore new scientific opportunities. Information about our past events (2022, 2021, 2020) is available, including: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1175\/BAMS-D-20-0256.1\">a report from our first workshop<\/a>; a perspective article in Joule on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.joule.2022.05.010\">\u201cOvercoming the disconnect between energy system and climate modelling\u201d<\/a>; and details and videos of our <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-energy\/next-generation-challenges-workshop\/webinar\/\">2022 webinar series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NextGenEC returns in September 2024, focussing on the following themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AI in energy and climate modelling\n<li>Opportunities and Challenges of Large Climate Ensembles for Energy System Planning\n<li>How can the climate and energy mitigation synergies in the IPCC AR7 cycle be enhanced?\n<li>Science for stakeholders\n<li>Using climate data in energy-modelling\n<\/ul>\n<p>A more detailed abstract for each theme is provided <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-energy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2024\/08\/NextGenEC24-day2descriptions.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will feature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plenary talks\n<li>Interactive breakout groups\n<li>Opportunities for participants to present their own research\n<\/ul>\n<p>The event is online-only and free-to-attend but registration has now closed.<\/p>\n<p>Furher programme information will be added to the webpage as it becomes available and joining details will be sent prior to the event.
