Information for Meteorology Department Seminar Speakers
The Department has activity covering a broad range of research interests including large and meso-scale dynamics, tropical meteorology, satellite estimation of rainfall, radar meteorology, oceanography, micrometeorology, atmospheric chemistry, space and atmospheric electricity, climate variability and climate change. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 75% of our research was graded as world leading or internationally excellent.
Seminar attendees are likely to come from a wide range of backgrounds from Professors to 1st year PhD students.
For these reasons, we would be grateful if you would include some basic background information in your talk, to help the non-specialist members of the audience to better understand the content and context of your presentation.
The Lecture Theatre is equipped with a PC and projector (with powerpoint and acrobat reader available). An overhead transparency projector and white board are also available. In addition, video and slide projectors may be available for use but please let us know in advance if you require these.
Seminars are usually at 12 noon on Mondays during term time. We ask that speakers aim to talk for 45 minutes, leaving 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
The format is usually that the speaker and a few staff members will go for lunch at the University’s senior common room directly after the seminar (at 1pm). Typically the speaker will also spend some time in the afternoon (and sometimes in the morning, before the seminar) meeting with other staff/students in the department who have common interests. If you are unsure of who does what at Reading, do visit our main web page http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/. Let us know if there is someone you would particularly like to talk to, so we can try and make sure they are present.
We will refund travel expenses within the UK (and in some cases from Europe) so please keep all your receipts. This includes standard class rail travel and a taxi from the station, or car mileage (for which there is a fixed rate per mile). We can also arrange for an overnight stay in a local hotel if needed. If you are travelling by car, please inform us in advance so that we can inform security and reserve you a parking space.
Seminar speakers are required to follow the University’s external speaker code of conduct.
