The impact of atmosphere-wave-ocean coupling on extreme surface wind forecasts


Research Interests:

  • Prediction of extratropical cyclones at convective-scale
  • Coupled prediction systems
  • Ensemble forecasting
  • Air-sea turbulent fluxes
  • Climatology of extreme wind speeds

Research Projects:

  • Investigation of the impact of air-sea surface exchanges on extreme surface wind forecasts associated with mesoscale weather systems using the convective-scale UK Environmental Prediction regional coupled (UKEP) multi-model system, developed by the Met Office
  • The importance of atmosphere-ocean-wave coupling in regional ensemble simulations of extratropical cyclones
  • A joint land-sea extreme wind speeds climatology of the UK and the surrounding seas over the 1979-2020 period


Departmental Responsibilities:

  • Fluid dynamics and Boundary-Layer meteorology teaching assistant.
  • I co-run Mesoscale Group with Sophie Cuckow . This group is for all researchers in the department whose research investigates atmospheric phenomena on the (poorly-defined) "mesoscale", which is approximately 1-1000km in horizontal extent.
  • Co-supervised with Prof Suzanne Gray an MSc student dissertation, April-August 2020.
