{"id":1409,"date":"2018-01-11T15:45:53","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T15:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/meteorology\/?page_id=1409"},"modified":"2025-04-07T10:50:54","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T09:50:54","slug":"research-placements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/meteorology\/research\/research-placements\/","title":{"rendered":"Research placements"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper\">\n<div id=\"lower\">\n<div id=\"container2\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<div id=\"centerColumn\" class=\"home\">\n<p>As a world-leading research centre at the forefront of climate and weather research, we host students on research experience placements every year.<\/p>\n<h3>Research experience placements<\/h3>\n<p>Each year the Department of Meteorology hosts postgraduate students who are interested in gaining experience in weather or climate research, either as part of their programme or as short-term placements of two to three months, often over the summer period.\u00a0 Students are required to have a background in Maths and Physics in order to make the most of this opportunity.\u00a0 The Department of Meteorology may also host undergraduate students, typically for no more than one month, to conduct research.<\/p>\n<p>Possible routes to a research placement at the Department of Meteorology include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/studyabroad.reading.ac.uk\/erasmus-programme\/\">ERASMUS placement scheme<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/nuffield-research-placements\" class=\"broken_link\">Nuffield Research Placements<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/internal\/staffportal\/news\/articles\/spsn-475810.aspx\">UROP (for UoR UG students)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sa.catapult.org.uk\/work-with-us\/space-placements-industry-spin\/\">Space Intern Network (SpIN)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepnet.ac.uk\/\">South East Physics Network (SEPnet)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nerc.ac.uk\/funding\/available\/postgrad\/advanced\/experience\/\">NERC summer placements<\/a>\u00a0<em>&#8211; the availability of places is dependent on NERC funding decisions and may vary from year to year<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Overseas funded placements<\/h3>\n<p>Some countries and organisations, such as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsps.go.jp\/\">JSPS<\/a>\u00a0and the Chinese\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gi2c.org\/\">Gi2C Group<\/a>\u00a0may offer funding for a placement with us.<\/p>\n<h3>Unfunded placements<\/h3>\n<p>The Department of Meteorology does not provide funding for placements.\u00a0 However, if you are unable to obtain funding from elsewhere, it may still be possible for you to do a short-term, unfunded research placement with us.\u00a0 Please e-mail <a href=\"mailto:n.c.robinson@reading.ac.uk\">Nicki Robinson<\/a>\u00a0your CV and a covering letter explaining which area of meteorology or environmental physics you are interested in, and we will be happy to advertise this to our scientists to see if any of them are able to help.<\/p>\n<p><b>Contact:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:n.c.robinson@reading.ac.uk\">Nicki Robinson<\/a>, Tel. 0118 378 8950<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Updated April 2025<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a world-leading research centre at the forefront of climate and weather research, we host students on research experience placements every year.
