Refugee movements to Britain in the 1970-90s<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Dr Amy Grant leads on this strand of the research, with the wider team contributing insight from the time period their strand focuses on. She compares their personal, lived experiences with how they were received and perceived in Britain. Amy will do this by examining government, media and public narratives about specific refugee movements during this time period.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”813″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”806″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]This is a major strand of research within the 4-year Nation of Refuge<\/em> project<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Amy\u2019s research strand will inform the Nation of Refuge<\/em> project, enabling us to understand and reimagine Britain’s relationship with refugees by:<\/p>\n [\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]This time period is important to the project because:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The Ugandan-Asian refugee movement is arguably the most well-known during the 1970s-1990s. However, Amy will also look at the experiences of Tamal and Vietnamese refugees which have received less media and research attention.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n She will explore how all\u00a0three refugee movements were received by the British government and British people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This period\u00a0in recent history\u00a0is particularly interesting,\u00a0and pivotal to understanding Britain\u2019s history with refugees. It was\u00a0a time of\u00a0rapid legal change,\u00a0<\/span>for example\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968, the\u00a0<\/span>Immigration\u00a0Act 1971,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the 1981 Nationality Act,\u00a0alongside\u00a0major geopolitical shifts. For example, at the\u00a0end of\u00a0the\u00a0Cold\u00a0War,\u00a0national\u00a0alliances\u00a0shifted,\u00a0displacing\u00a0huge numbers\u00a0of\u00a0people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The early 1990s saw a\u00a0<\/span>significant\u00a0uplift<\/span>\u00a0in asylum applications to Britain, rising from only a few thousand annually in the late 1980s to more than 70,000 by the end of the decade, reflecting wider conflicts such as the Yugoslav Wars\u00a0and the closure\u00a0of other migration routes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”808″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Research Methods and Approaches<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n To understand if and how Britain has thought of itself as a welcoming nation, Amy\u00a0is\u00a0looking at:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These sources enable\u00a0Amy\u00a0to explore the refugee experience in Britain\u00a0in the 1970-90s\u00a0and the reception they received in Britain,\u00a0within the\u00a0context of the\u00a0institutional laws and rules that governed their lives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Amy\u2019s\u00a0research will make a significant\u00a0contribution to\u00a0future refugee research and policy making\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This research project will:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
