Scholars have\u00a0discussed how classifications such as \u201crefugee\u201d and \u201cmigrant\u201d shape public debate and how public sentiment can shift rapidly in response to political rhetoric or misinformation. Yet despite rich academic work, public discourse often\u00a0remains\u00a0polarised oscillating\u00a0between depictions of \u201cillegal migration\u201d and nostalgic celebration of past humanitarianism. This symposium aims to\u00a0initiat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e a conversation to examine how Britain imagines \u201crefuge,\u201d why these narratives matter, and how they might be reframed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hosted by the four\u2011year UKRI\u2011funded project\u00a0<em>Nation of Refuge<\/em>\u00a0(launched\u00a0November\u00a02025), this event explores how Britain has thought, talked, legislated, remembered, and felt about \u201coffering refuge\u201d across the last century.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are delighted to announce that <strong>Professor Tony Kushner<\/strong> (University of Southampton) will be giving the keynote lecture. <strong>Professor Andrea Hammel<\/strong> (University of Aberystwyth),\u00a0<strong>Dr Sarah Linn<\/strong> (Manchester Metropolitan University), <strong>Dr\u00a0Agnes Woolley<\/strong> (University of Southampton) and <strong>Paul Dudman<\/strong> (University of East London) will open the
