Reading OR Week Prize – Rules of participation

The University of Reading’s Strategy for Research and Innovation 2024–30 recognises that, as a research-intensive institution, achieving excellence and global impact depends on fostering open, transparent, and robust research practices. Open Research enhances collaboration across disciplines and strengthens the infrastructure that supports high-quality, responsible research.

The Reading Open Research Week (June 9–13) is organised as part of the Open Research Action Plan 2024-29. On the occasion of this celebration of the great things we do, we are pleased to launch the Open Research Prize to reward outstanding contributions that exemplify Open Research principles in action.

  • First prize: £500
  • Second prize: £300
  • Third prize: £200

We look forward to recognising the creativity, commitment, and collaborative spirit that make Open Research a cornerstone of excellent research at Reading.

Eligibility

All contributors to the Reading Open Research Week, who are not part of the Organisation Team, will be automatically entered into the prize competition. This includes speakers in the Lightning Talks series and individuals who contribute full sessions, who are involved in delivering or supporting Open Research or presenting about their experience.

Contributions must be made by a member of staff (research, professional service or academic, any School or Function) whose employment with the University extends to at least July 2025. This is because the prize would be awarded into a Project Code. Contributions can involve research students but a member of staff must submit, oversee the contribution and ensure alignment with the University’s Strategy for Research and Innovation.

Selection Process and announcement of Winners

Contributions will be ranked and prizes awarded accordingly. The final ranking will be based on a combination of audience votes and panel assessment, weighted equally:

  • 50% of the final score will be determined by votes from attendees of Reading Open Research Week events. A voting portal will be available throughout the week, allowing both staff and students to vote for the contribution they found most impactful or inspiring.
  • The remaining 50% will be determined by a judging panel composed of representatives from the Open Research Action Plan Implementation Group. The panel will review all eligible contributions and evaluate them based on the criteria outlined below.
  1.  To what extent does the contribution demonstrate and promote transparency, rigour and openness?
  2. To what extent does the contribution encourage interdisciplinary collaboration or support inclusive, community-based research?

Winners will be announced following the conclusion of Reading Open Research Week, with prizes awarded shortly thereafter.
