Opening up science for all<\/a> requires a collective effort and new ways of thinking. As a project team<\/a>, we came up with the following principles to guide our activities.<\/h1>\n

We believe that sustainable citizen science and public engagement with environmental research must:<\/h1>\n
    \n
  • \n

    be a multi-disciplinary and partnership-building endeavour;<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    actively build on existing expertise in citizen science and participatory engagement;<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    acknowledge people have a complex identities, often with contradictory opinions;<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    respect and value all knowledge as meaningful and promote pluralism in expertise;<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    develop increased capacity, interest and skills of researchers and audiences;<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    enable avenues of engagement that acknowledge different needs, interests and availability;<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    facilitate public involvement in all stages of the scientific process and make explicit links to everyday life.<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
