{"id":1840,"date":"2025-05-11T22:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T21:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/?p=1840"},"modified":"2026-03-24T11:17:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T11:17:30","slug":"childrens-attitudes-towards-language-learning-preliminary-findings-from-the-pipl-focus-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/childrens-attitudes-towards-language-learning-preliminary-findings-from-the-pipl-focus-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"A Deeper Look at Children\u2019s Attitudes Towards Language Learning: Preliminary findings from the PiPL focus groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of the Progression in Primary Languages (PiPL) project, we have been exploring children\u2019s attitudes towards language learning at Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6, ages 7-11) and how they may change over time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following Jasmin Silver\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/childrens-attitudes-towards-language-learning-preliminary-findings-from-the-pipl-research-project\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">blog<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about our children\u2019s attitudes survey, here, we share some of our initial findings from our <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focus group interviews<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with children and what light they may shed on children\u2019s attitudes towards language learning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 24pt\"><b>Methods and Sample<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to the attitudes survey, we conducted focus group interviews with small groups of Key Stage 2 children in each school to explore their attitudes towards language learning in more depth. In summer 2024, we conducted 83 focus groups with more than 320 children across Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 from 17 primary schools, who were learning French, German or Spanish at school. I love the number board games.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1847\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/shelby-murphy-figueroa-dniQt82glsQ-unsplash-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Songs <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were also enjoyed by children, who appreciated how the musical elements made learning vocabulary easier<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spanish makes me feel really happy and calm because first we get to sing Spanish songs and then we get to write different words in our books.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c\u2026songs at the beginning of the lesson\u2026 get our minds going that we\u2019re learning French.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Visual <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">movement-based<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> activities as well as <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">craft-based tasks<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> following language instructions were enjoyed by pupils.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019d draw the thing and then I could remember what it was by the picture.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;When I see and hear the word, it\u2019s easier to remember.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Associating gestures with sounds<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was considered a helpful strategy for remembering challenging vocabulary and appreciated by pupils. Some pupils mentioned enjoying using tools like PowerPoint slides, iPads, and mini whiteboards, which they felt made learning and retaining vocabulary easier.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many enjoyed <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">speaking activities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, for example <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">role plays <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in a caf\u00e9 or shop, which enabled pupils to have simple conversations for practical purposes and make connections with real world scenarios.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One pupil described it as \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">feeling like you were actually getting something in France.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some pupils also appreciated focusing on phonics in lessons.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt the start of each lesson, we focus on the sound in French, so we know how to recognize more sounds.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe do Spanish phonics to like help you pronounce the words.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Negative or more challenging aspects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alongside these positive aspects, some pupils also commented on<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> more challenging <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aspects:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Classroom activities\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In some schools, pupils suggested they would enjoy a wider range of activities and more varied content and had clear ideas about what would interest them. This was particularly the case for older children:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMaybe games, because it\u2019ll get us engaged and it\u2019s fun and it\u2019ll make people more likely to listen.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some felt that topics, for example numbers and colours were revisited too often and more variety would keep them interested:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe do colours again each year, and it&#8217;s kind of like boring when you already know them.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although, interestingly, others mentioned that they found it helpful to revisit previously learnt content, as they felt it helped them to remember and retain the language.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some pupils said they would like more opportunities to practise speaking:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c\u2026more talking, more speaking, less listening\u201d.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Linked to this, some pupils highlighted that they would like to have opportunities to use vocabulary in complete sentences and simple conversations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey teach us just simple words; they don\u2019t teach us how to like have an actual conversation.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pronunciation and spelling<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Navigating pronunciation and spelling was perceived by many as a challenge in their language learning. Feeling self-conscious or worried about mispronouncing words was mentioned.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSometimes I struggle a bit because sometimes the words are a little bit too hard. It\u2019s hard to pronounce.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf we said a wrong word there, it could be a rude word.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWriting down the words can be tricky.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1852\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/pencil-3744153_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grammar\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some pupils articulated the challenging aspects of grammar, for example:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI get mixed up with le and la\u2014is it this one or that one?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vocabulary<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some pupils found it hard to remember words between lessons when there was no reinforcement of the words. They felt that retaining new words outside the classroom was difficult, particularly after longer school breaks or where lessons did not happen regularly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Usefulness of language learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Practical use of language learning\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Initial findings suggest that many children valued language learning for its practical use, in particular mentioning the benefit of learning a language for <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">travel<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">holiday<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> purposes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI feel good about it because it could come in handy in the future, like going to Spain and you can communicate with people there.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI like it because when I travel, I can speak to French people.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think Spanish is very useful \u2026if your parents are planning an upcoming trip to Spain or somewhere that speaks Spanish\u2026 it would be really good because then you can talk to them, make new friends, and \u2026 would be useful to see what&#8217;s on the menu.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Linked to this some pupils talked about the<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> transactional<\/span><\/b> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">benefits of knowing another language:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c\u2026we went to France, it was useful at the shops.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1846\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2025\/05\/apples-1841132_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Future learning<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and opportunities were also commented on:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSo then when you move into secondary school, you can learn a different language, maybe like Spanish. And because you learn German, learning other languages is probably easier\u201d.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Older pupils in particular perceived language learning as beneficial for potential <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">career <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">opportunities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Interest in countries and culture<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Connecting with people\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pupils talked about the benefits of being able to connect with people, including family, and showing respect for others:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It\u2019s kind of impolite to just go to somebody\u2019s country and assume they\u2019ll speak your language.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span English, so then it would help us to speak to them.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen people from Spain come here and they don\u2019t know how to speak any English, you can maybe\u2026 help them\u201d.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019d like to learn one of the languages my friends speak\u2026 then we could talk to each other in different languages.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interest in countries and cultures in which the language is spoken<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pupils not only wanted to connect with people from different countries and better understand them, they also showed an openness and interest in getting to know other cultures<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think that&#8217;s very important to be able to know a bit more of everybody else&#8217;s culture.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLearning another language helps you understand people better.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some children showed interest in deeper cultural connections, for example, imagining living in a different country,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c\u2026or if you go to Germany even if you know a little bit and you&#8217;re talking to a German person that speaks German they could kind of teach you German and then you&#8217;d be able to live in a different country.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Linked to this was the curiosity of some children to learn other languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Italian, Arabic, Turkish. This was due to a variety of reasons, for example, prior exposure, personal or family connections, cultural interest and challenge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cif we had some lessons in Ukraine, we would be able to help them better to understand what happens instead of using Google Translate.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI want to try speaking Chinese because I also have two Chinese friends&#8230; they can maybe help us.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I want to learn Arabic, because it\u2019s really hard and I really want to challenge myself.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some children expressed the desire to learn multiple languages with one pupil saying:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI feel like we should have a whole languages department.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another pupil mentioned that they would like their language valued in the school setting:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTurkish because it&#8217;s my native language and it&#8217;s a bit tricky for some people and I would like them to learn about it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s next?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These initial findings help us to understand more about children\u2019s attitudes, building on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/progression-primary-languages\/childrens-attitudes-towards-language-learning-preliminary-findings-from-the-pipl-research-project\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">results of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> attitudes survey<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and give us an insight into the aspects of learning languages which children find enjoyable and motivating versus aspects which are seen as more challenging.\u00a0 Our next step is to undertake, a more detailed, and longitudinal analysis of both the attitude surveys and focus groups, which will add contextual depth and reveal more nuanced reasons as to why children think the way they do about language learning and how this changes over time.
