A universal approach that focuses on early intervention and prevention could provide a sustainable solution for promoting mental health and greater resilience in adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>Our proposed solution is a new and exciting initiative called the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Resilience Rucksacks\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0This project is inspired by the baby box in Scotland, in which every new born baby receives a box comprising essential items to support a healthy start in life. Akin to the baby box, our vision is that young people transitioning from primary to secondary school will receive a rucksack containing items that research has identified as beneficial for adolescents\u2019 mental health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, we hope the Resilience Rucksack initiative will provide a unique opportunity to engage young people in dialogue surrounding mental health, as well as promoting greater mental health literacy and awareness. This project has connected the University of Reading with a wider community of people working to provide mental health interventions. Read more about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/reading-resilience-network\/resilience-community\/\">Resilience Community<\/a>\u00a0here.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Phases of the Project&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1755166270270-a43a4846-a38d&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">he Resilience Rucksacks initiative consisted of <strong>five<\/strong> main stages which are outlined below<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stage<\/b> <strong>1:<\/strong> Literature Review<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">The initial phase of the Resilience Rucksacks initiative involved identifying <strong>key research themes<\/strong> or &#8216;<strong>active ingredients<\/strong>&#8216; (specific aspects of an intervention that make a meaningful difference) that have been reported to prevent and\/or manage anxiety and depression symptoms in young people.<\/li>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">The majority of research themes were derived from the <strong>Wellcome Trust Report<\/strong> &#8216;What science has shown can help young people with anxiety and depression&#8217; (Part 1 &amp; 2) (<a id=\"LPlnk162570\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/reports\/what-science-has-shown-can-help-young-people-anxiety-and-depression\" href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/reports\/what-science-has-shown-can-help-young-people-anxiety-and-depression\" data-outlook-id=\"4440e68f-2e27-4071-8880-90b334e5bd1c\">https:\/\/wellcome.org\/reports\/what-science-has-shown-can-help-young-people-anxiety-and-depression<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">This was supplemented by an <strong>additional, exploratory literature search<\/strong> of existing research to capture any further themes.<\/li>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">Subsequently, the team generated a long list of these research themes and conducted an<strong> initial evaluation<\/strong> based on the strength of the evidence base and appropriateness\/practicality for co-production of specific well-being items for the rucksack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stages 2 &amp; 3:<\/strong> Consultations- Steering Group &amp; Online Survey<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">Following this, a <strong>steering consultation group<\/strong> was convened which consisted of young people, school staff\/teachers, and parents. This steering group helped to short-list the final research themes and provided invaluable feedback on other aspects of the project.<\/li>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">An <strong>online survey<\/strong> (with 200 participants) was also circulated to gather feedback from a wider sample of young people, school staff\/teachers, and parents.<\/li>\n<li class=\"elementToProof\">Based on responses from the steering group and online survey respondents, the following four themes were selected: <strong>Sleep<\/strong>, <strong>Movement<\/strong>, <strong>Friendships<\/strong>, and <strong>Self-compassion<\/strong><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The group met regularly to review the progress of the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stage 4:<\/strong> C<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">o-production Workshops with Young People and Professional Designers\/ Artists<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We identified <strong>wellbeing tools<\/strong> that will best help support the four core themes.<\/li>\n<li>This involved <strong>co-producing<\/strong> and <strong>co-designing<\/strong> wellbeing items\/tools with young people and their relevant representatives (school teachers\/staff, parents\/carers) using a robust research evidence approach.<\/li>\n<li>We recruited groups of young people to help us <strong>co-design<\/strong> and <strong>produce<\/strong> wellbeing tools for the rucksack based on each theme\/active ingredient.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">We recruited <strong>5-10 young people<\/strong> (in Year 6+) per theme, who attended <strong>four workshops per theme<\/strong>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">For each theme, a member of our research team provided an evidence-based talk at the start of the workshop and supported the discussion. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">We also held a series of <strong>three additional<\/strong> workshops for young people to guide specific tools with professional artists, including a colourful comic &amp; song.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>We also ran a and view the winning design!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stage 5:<\/strong> Launch of the Resilience Fairs and Well-being Tools<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Following the initial design and pilot stages, we then launched a series of <strong>Resilience Fairs<\/strong> in schools across Oxfordshire and Berkshire in which researchers and mental health professionals set up booths illustrating <strong>evidence-based approaches<\/strong> for building resilience and maintaining wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>Each booth represented each of the <strong>central themes<\/strong> of this research, and contained wellbeing tools that young people were able to choose for their resilience rucksack.<\/li>\n<li>Click <a Evaluation &amp; Monitoring<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stage 5 has allowed for us to collect valuable data measuring the impact of the Resilience Fairs for pupils and teachers alike, through both a We were delighted to find that young people reported a significant improvement in many ways. In particular, they reported a general improvement in mental wellbeing and resilience, more positive attitudes for the transition from primary to secondary school, greater ease for discussing mental health issues, and importantly improved knowledge in sleep and self-compassion. Encouragingly, these improvements occurred immediately and directly following the Fairs.
