{"id":633,"date":"2023-04-16T00:38:13","date_gmt":"2023-04-15T23:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/reading-resilience-network\/?p=633"},"modified":"2023-05-15T14:16:43","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T13:16:43","slug":"rrn-workshop-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/reading-resilience-network\/rrn-workshop-4\/","title":{"rendered":"RRN Workshop 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif\"><strong>The Problem with Mental Health Awareness in Schools<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Resilience Network \u2018Findings Solutions to Key Mental Health Challenges\u2019 Series Workshop 4, <\/strong><strong>In collaboration with the <i>Well-being and Resilience in Mental Health <\/i><i>Group (WARM)<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>About this event:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workshop 4 was held on\u00a0<em>Thursday 11th May 2023 from\u00a0<\/em><i>12 to 1 pm at the <\/i><i>School of <\/i><i>Psychology and Clinical <\/i><i>Language Sciences <\/i><i>(Harry Pitts Building, <\/i><i>Room no.G79) and was attended <\/i><i>Online via MS <\/i><i>Teams.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>About the talk:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, there have been extensive efforts in secondary schools to prevent, treat\u00a0and\u00a0raise awareness about adolescent mental health problems. For some adolescents, these efforts are essential\u00a0and\u00a0will lead to a reduction in clinical symptoms. But it is also vital to assess whether, for others, the current approach might be causing harm. A growing body of quantitative research indicates that some aspects of school-based mental health interventions do indeed increase distress or clinical symptoms,\u00a0and\u00a0qualitative work indicates that this may be partly due to the intervention itself. In this talk, I will argue that we need to more carefully measure and understand harm from school interventions.\u00a0We should be very cautious about the idea that providing a mental health intervention in a school is necessarily better than not providing one at all<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>About the speaker:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Dr Lucy Foulkes is an academic psychologist at the University of Oxford. She leads research into mental health and social development in adolescence, with a particular focus on the possible negative consequences of increased public mental health awareness. She is currently a Prudence Trust Research Fellow, investigating how school-based mental health interventions may be causing adolescents harm. <\/i><i>Her first book,\u00a0What Mental Illness Really Is (\u2026and what it isn\u2019t), was published in 2021.
