Update October 2024 \u2013 Keith Nyakubaya, Senior Lab Technician"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last year I have been the lead technical support on the Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer laboratory (MP-AES, a related technique to ICP-OES). \u00a0After completing my laboratory induction, l successfully familiarised myself with the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of an MP-AES.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by months of method development and validation of the acid digestion of samples, preparation of calibration standards, and data quality assurance. \u00a0The analysis of archaeological samples using the MP-AES commenced at the beginning of the year, in January 2024. \u00a0This included analysis of the following samples: British Museum, Beedon, Bishopstone, Colchester, Fishbourne and currently analysing the Silchester samples. \u00a0A total of over 4200 injections have been analysed with the MP-AES.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-836 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/remade\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2024\/10\/IMG_9535-copy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"264\" style=\"text-align: center\">Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer laboratory<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also prepared and reviewed Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures for the MP-AES. \u00a0Provided training to MSc and PhD students, on standard methods used in the preparation, extraction and analysis of samples for MP-AES.\u00a0 I provided a presentation on the \u2018Use of MP-AES in the analysis of Archaeological Copper-Alloys\u2019 at University of Surrey at an Agilent seminar. \u00a0Another presentation was given on the departmental \u2018Research hour technician show and tell\u2019 at University of Reading. \u00a0I presented the principal use of MP-AES in analysing archaeological samples and provided a laboratory tour for University of Reading colleagues. \u00a0Some notable challenges during the year included silver and arsenic analysis. \u00a0These challenges were resolved during the method development and an acceptable method was adopted.<\/p>\n<p><img
