DESCRIPTION:Many public funders of research require applicants to submit a data management plan (DMP) or Technical Plan as part of their application\, detailing what data will be collected in the proposed project\, how data will be managed\, and how and where data will be preserved and made available to others after the project concludes. Whether a funder requires it or not\, if you use data in your research\, you should have a DMP for your project. Writing a DMP can help you plan and execute research effectively\, curate data for maximum utility\, identify and manage risks\, and ensure resource needs are appropriately costed. \nThis 2-hour course will offer practical guidance on developing an effective DMP\, and how to make best use of a DMP in your day-to-day research. Information about data management planning tools and resources to help you will be provided.

It will introduce the topic of Research Impact\, the good that our research has on the world outside academia\, and outline its importance and the steps that can be taken to achieve it. The Research Impact Team will work with you to understand the impact that your research could have\, the stakeholders that would be interested in your work (including organisations\, policy makers and the general public) and how to approach them and finally how to plan to gather evidence to support impact claims. SUMMARY:Defence and Security Community of Practice: Industry Engagement Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The University of Reading has a long-standing relationship with the Defence and Security Sector. Most recently\, we were chosen to provide degree level education to army officers as part of the Army Higher Education Pathway\, led by Henley Business School and the School of Politics\, Economics\, and International Relations; and on 1 April renewed our Memorandum of Understanding and partnership with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. These existing relationships\, and the sizeable network of possible partners in the Thames Valley\, offer a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from all relevant disciplines and key stakeholders in the defence and security sector to network and build a Defence and Security Community of Practice\, and to identify key challenges for research and innovation\, and possible collaborative responses to them. \nJoin us for a seminar with representatives from four companies based in the Thames Valley to explore the challenges currently facing the Defence & Security sectors which artificial intelligence\, machine learning and big data could potentially solve\, followed by an informal networking lunch. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJonathan Read of Boeing’s Phantom Works International.\nDarrell Jaya-Ratnam of DIEM Analytics.\nHelen Muncie of Thales Cyber & Consulting Services.\nDick Hemsley of Vedette Consulting.\n\nAt the seminar\, we will explore some defence and security challenges\, explore some research approaches to meet these\, from both an industrial and academic perspective. \nIf you are interested in attending this workshop then please email: workingwithbusiness@reading.ac.uk
