SUMMARY:Fairbrother Lecture: Women's Voices: From Slavery to the #MeToo Movement
DESCRIPTION:Graduate School Annual Fairbrother Lecture\, presented by Elizabeth Barnes (History) \nIn October 2017 following sexual abuse allegations against the film producer Harvey Weinstein\, the viral spread of the #MeToo hashtag on social media sparked an unprecedented global wave of women disclosing their own experiences of sexual assault and harassment. \nWithin a 24 hour period the #MeToo hashtag was tweeted more than 500\,000 times and featured in 12 million Facebook posts. For many\, this represented a watershed moment of social progress. But what lessons does history hold for the #MeToo movement? \nThe end of the American Civil War offered emancipated African Americans equal protection under the law for the first time – including granting black women the right to bring rape charges against white men. Similarly to #MeToo\, the period saw an escalation of disclosures of sexual violence\, with black women seizing upon the opportunity to redefine their past abusive relationships with white men. \nJoin Elizabeth Barnes as she recounts her research journey through the history of this wave of revelations and explores how the pattern of progress followed by sustained backlash continues to be felt today. \nPlease note\, this event is not suitable for children. Admission is free. Booking is required.

SUMMARY:The Heroes and Villains in our Veins - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries. \nWhat are the components that flow through our vessels? What causes the risk of cardiovascular disease? Why is snake venom so dangerous when it gets into our blood? Our speakers will look at some of these questions\, talking about this complex system and how it comes under attack from ‘villains’. We will see how all the components work together to save the day.

SUMMARY:Brain Cells and Worms v. Dementia and Parkinson's! - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.\nHow brain cells are lost in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s is a real puzzle\, being tackled by many scientists in lots of different ways. In these talks\, Selina will explain how we can better understand dementia\, through growing brains cells in the lab\, while Rachael will talk about what we can learn about brain cell loss in Parkinson’s\, from genetically engineered\, microscopic worms. Suitable for all audiences- no science knowledge needed.

SUMMARY:Our Shared Planet - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Nothing survives in isolation. Every single species is utterly dependent on a complex and vast web of interactions\, and we are no exception. We are just one of the many millions of species that live on this planet and through this evening’s talks find out how we need the natural world just as much\, if not more than the natural world needs us and what happens when we come into conflict with it. \nPint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.
