SUMMARY:From Language Learning to Loss - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.\nHow can learning new languages train your brain? What can we learn about how language is processed when the brain is damaged? Christos will explain how bilingualism can reshape the brain\, while Willemijn will talk about what happens when language is lost. If you want to learn about new research\, discovering how the brain controls language\, this is the talk for you. Suitable for all audiences- no science knowledge needed.

SUMMARY:That Gut Feeling: We Are Not Alone - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries. \nWe have trillions of bacteria living in our bodies\, together known as the microbiome. From birth\, they play a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy\, in protecting against pathogens and preventing diseases. They are greatly influenced by what we eat and here we will find out how to feed them and what it takes to keep them happy.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the SciVAL Research Intelligence Tool (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:SciVal is a powerful research intelligence tool based on bibliometric data from research publications. SciVal enables researchers and those supporting research staff to visualize their institution/group’s research performance and benchmark it relative to their peers based on a variety of different metrics. It can also help you identify areas or partners for the development of collaborative networks. This session will introduce you to the scope and possibilities of SciVal and show you how to perform targeted analyses based on the publications of your own research division. This is a 90 minute session. The first 60 minutes will explain what the tool is and how it can be used. The last 30 minutes will be an extended hands-on activity so that you get practical experience of using the tool.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Bibliometrics (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:Bibliometric data are increasingly used in research assessment exercises and in recruitment decisions but they can also give you insights into how your research is being used by others and help you to make informed journal choices. This session will introduce some commonly used bibliometrics and explain how they are calculated and what they mean. The issues behind the responsible use of metrics will also be explored. A hands-on section of the session will use tools such as Scopus\, SciVal\, Google Scholar and InCites to explore bibliometric data sources. This is a 90 minute session however the last 30 minutes will be allocated for hands on tasks.

SUMMARY:Defence and Security Community of Practice: Industry Engagement Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The University of Reading has a long-standing relationship with the Defence and Security Sector. Most recently\, we were chosen to provide degree level education to army officers as part of the Army Higher Education Pathway\, led by Henley Business School and the School of Politics\, Economics\, and International Relations; and on 1 April renewed our Memorandum of Understanding and partnership with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. These existing relationships\, and the sizeable network of possible partners in the Thames Valley\, offer a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from all relevant disciplines and key stakeholders in the defence and security sector to network and build a Defence and Security Community of Practice\, and to identify key challenges for research and innovation\, and possible collaborative responses to them. \nJoin us for a seminar with representatives from four companies based in the Thames Valley to explore the challenges currently facing the Defence & Security sectors which artificial intelligence\, machine learning and big data could potentially solve\, followed by an informal networking lunch. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJonathan Read of Boeing’s Phantom Works International.\nDarrell Jaya-Ratnam of DIEM Analytics.\nHelen Muncie of Thales Cyber & Consulting Services.\nDick Hemsley of Vedette Consulting.\n\nAt the seminar\, we will explore some defence and security challenges\, explore some research approaches to meet these\, from both an industrial and academic perspective. \nIf you are interested in attending this workshop then please email: workingwithbusiness@reading.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Smart City Cluster in the Thames Valley – How can smart city thinking make a difference in Reading and other parts of the Thames Valley?
DESCRIPTION:Rob McDonald\, Director of Smart Infrastructure at Peter Brett Associates will deliver the next Reading 2050 lecture. Here he outlines the main themes of his presentation. \nWe are living through a time of unprecedented change both in terms of the rate of change in technology but also in the challenges we face. Council budgets are under increasing financial pressure to deliver their core services with worse to come with an aging population and Reading is no exception. At the same time climate has come to the fore and Reading has joined a large number of authorities across the UK in declaring a climate emergency with the aim to be carbon neutral by 2030\, a challenge of a scale which should not be underestimated. \nA smart city approach to thinking needs to be at the core of our response to these challenges\, tackling our big challenges from a wide range of perspectives\, breaking down the silos between specialisms and better engaging with the people who live\, shop and work in our town. Whilst there in an inference that smart cities are all about the technology\, the optimum solution may not be technology led. \n \nReading Borough Council is the lead authority for the Thames Valley Berkshire\, Smart City Cluster project which is acting as a catalyst to accelerate smart city thinking\, building on existing cross authority and cross sector working within the authorities. It is a £1.73m internet of things (IoT) based project funded by Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). This lecture will set out how the project has formed in the way that it has\, balancing the need of the authorities with available funding opportunities. It will set out where we are\, give an overview of the first round of challenges issued to industry and the next steps with the project. \nRob is a Director of Smart Infrastructure at Peter Brett Associates\, now part of Stantec. He has over 25 years of experience in transport planning and ITS with a key focus on research\, innovation and knowledge sharing through UK and European funding. In recent years Rob had developed his focus from intelligent transport systems to a wider smart cities approach\, recognising the need to break out of individual siloes to deliver the places that we want to live in in the future. Rob secured funding and is now leading a LEP funded Smart City Cluster project in Berkshire that will be calling on industry\, in the first instance\, to address challenges around Council services for vulnerable people. Rob is also a keen advocate of embracing disruptive technology changes that will influence the way we travel and is working with his new colleagues in Stantec to bring in their leading-edge experience such as in shared autonomous vehicles. \nThe lecture is part of the ‘Economy and Employment’ theme of the Reading 2050 lecture series\, which provide a platform to discuss how Reading should evolve into a smarter and more sustainable city by 2050 (www.reading2050.co.uk ) \nAdmission to the lecture is free. \nThe SBE\, Barton Wilmore and Reading UK\, established the Reading 2050 group in 2013. The Reading 2050 lecture series is structured around three themes\, which underpin the Reading 2050 vision: \n*Place and Environment\n*People and Lifestyle\n*Economy and Employment \nIn 2017\, the School brought together expert speakers to discuss Reading’s heritage and history\, the future of its transport and energy and the impact of climate change and floods. A discussion on Reading’s Art and Culture was facilitated in 2018\, and there are other Reading 2050 events planned for 2019. \nhttps://livingreading.co.uk/publications-events
