SUMMARY:Reading 2050: The Future of the Reading Diamond in the Thames Valley
DESCRIPTION:Please join Professor Kathy Pain from the School of Real Estate and Planning\, for a lecture: ‘The Future of the Reading Diamond in the Thames Valley’ \nThe lecture is part of the ‘Economy and Employment’ theme of the Reading 2050 lecture series\, which provide a platform to discuss how Reading should evolve into a smarter and more sustainable city by 2050 (www.reading2050.co.uk ) \nAdmission to the lecture is free. \nThe SBE\, Barton Wilmore and Reading UK\, established the Reading 2050 group in 2013. The Reading 2050 lecture series is structured around three themes\, which underpin the Reading 2050 vision: \n*Place and Environment\n*People and Lifestyle\n*Economy and Employment \nIn 2017\, the School brought together expert speakers to discuss Reading’s heritage and history\, the future of its transport and energy and the impact of climate change and floods. A discussion on Reading’s Art and Culture was facilitated in 2018\, and there are other Reading 2050 events planned for 2019. \nhttps://livingreading.co.uk/publications-events

SUMMARY:Research Impact (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:Research Staff Development Opportunities. \nThis session is aimed at all research staff within all disciplines. It will introduce the topic of Research Impact\, the good that our research has on the world outside academia\, and outline its importance and the steps that can be taken to achieve it. The Research Impact Team will work with you to understand the impact that your research could have\, the stakeholders that would be interested in your work (including organisations\, policy makers and the general public) and how to approach them and finally how to plan to gather evidence to support impact claims. Pathways to Impact (part of RCUK grant applications) will also be covered. This session will be tailored to suit academics with developed\, developing or potential research impact.

SUMMARY:Public lecture: Britain's Housing Crisis: Designing future homes and cities
DESCRIPTION:Britain’s housing system is broken. Sky-high house prices mean buying a home is just a dream for many people\, yet it is still considered an essential pursuit. Tenants are pushed into poverty or forced to move by rent rises\, pulling families and communities apart. Young people see their life options constrained in a string of shared flats\, or stuck at home with their parents. \nSo what’s the solution? In this lecture\, architect Professor Flora Samuel will deliver her manifesto for a better housing future. She will show how designing better homes and cities is crucial to resolving the current crisis. Intelligent design of towns and cities can improve people’s health and happiness. Social homes must be built in growing numbers that are not only affordable\, but enviable. The aim must be to improve the physical environment for the next generation\, to help them tackle a growing list of social\, political and economic challenges. \nFlora Samuel is Professor of Architecture in the Built Environment at the University of Reading\, and a Co-Investigator at the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE)\, for which she leads the ‘Place’ theme.

SUMMARY:The Great Debate 2019: Can new technologies transform healthcare?
DESCRIPTION:The increasing adoption of digital technology has resulted in fundamental changes in many industries. Yet healtcare\, which represents about 10% of global GDP\, has lagged behind other sectors. This is about to change as big data and artificial intelligence will deliver improvements in diagnosis and treatment that will increase health care’s reach\, efficiency\, accuracy and reduce waiting time for patients. \nTechnological advances offer significant opportunities to improve healthcare and have the potential to deliver significant value for the NHS. This year’s Great Debate will provide an update on the latest technology advances to deliver these benefits. \nThere will be four presentations as below\, followed by a debate and Q&A. \n\n\n\nHuman-Computer Interaction\nDigital Health innovation at the NHS Frontline: Transformation and reality checks\nUsing AI to improve clinical effectiveness\nEnsuring new technologies are introduced effectively and safely\n\n\n\nAdmission free but booking is necessary. This event is being held in British Science Week – find other events in Reading here.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Multiculturalism: Why speaking more than one language is good for your health
DESCRIPTION:Join in the discussion with our expert panel for a lively conversation about what multilingualism means to you. \nSpeaking more than one language promotes multiple identities\, but not everyone sees multilingualism this way\, and language policy decisions sometimes impact negatively on multilingual speakers’ life chances. All of this raises critical questions for researchers\, policymakers\, practitioners and individual multilingual speakers about the role of language learning in fostering a multilingual world. \nIn December 2017\, the Salzburg Global Seminar Series hosted representatives from the spheres of policy\, academia\, civil society and business\, representing over 25 countries\, to look at the importance of language policy and practice from three perspectives – the individual\, the state\, and market and society – and examine how language learning can help integration\, international relations and employment opportunities. The outcome of these discussions\, the Salzburg Statement on Multilingualism and Integration will be launched around the world on International Mother Language Day\, 21 February 2018. \nAs a follow up to this publication\, the University of Reading will be hosting a small panel of multilingualism practitioners inviting an audience to join in the conversation. We are keen to know how the Salzburg Statement is relevant to you in your multilingual lives. \nAdmission is free and open to all. We hope the event will be of particular interest to bilingual families\, teachers\, interpreters\, counsellors\, and professionals who work with bilingual families.

SUMMARY:‘Moments of Identification’: LGBTQ+ History and Heritage - Professor Richard Parkinson\, University of Oxford (Classics seminar series)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Parkinson’s lecture will illustrate the gradual evolution of an LGBT history project at the British Museum in a variety of formats\, including A Little Gay History (2013) and subsequent exhibitions and trails. It will question how LGBT histories are best displayed – as temporary interventions or as integrated parts of permanent displays – and consider the role of an ancient historian in shaping and presenting this heritage. \nRichard Bruce Parkinson is a British academic. He is currently Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford and a fellow of The Queen’s College\, Oxford. He was previously a curator in the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan\, British Museum. His main area of research in the interpretation and performance of Ancient Egyptian poetry of the classic period. As well as academic monographs and articles\, he has written popular books on Egyptology. Drawing on his work on the ‘subaltern’ aspects of ancient literature\, he has published on LGBTQ+ history across world cultures\, including A Little Gay History (2013)\, dedicated to his husband. He recently acted as consultant to No Offence: Exploring LGBTQ+ Histories\, The British Museum’s touring exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum\, Oxford\, which ran until December 2018.
