SUMMARY:Writing a Data Management Plan (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:Research Staff Development Opportunities. \nMany public funders of research require applicants to submit a data management plan (DMP) or Technical Plan as part of their application\, detailing what data will be collected in the proposed project\, how data will be managed\, and how and where data will be preserved and made available to others after the project concludes. Whether a funder requires it or not\, if you use data in your research\, you should have a DMP for your project. Writing a DMP can help you plan and execute research effectively\, curate data for maximum utility\, identify and manage risks\, and ensure resource needs are appropriately costed. \nThis 2-hour course will offer practical guidance on developing an effective DMP\, and how to make best use of a DMP in your day-to-day research. Information about data management planning tools and resources to help you will be provided.

SUMMARY:Engaging with Policymakers (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:Research Staff Development Opportunities. \nAt some point in their career\, many researchers will be asked to provide advice to policymakers in government\, the public sector or the private sector. In this session\, we will discuss some of the different ways that researchers can engage with Westminster and with Whitehall. We will look at how policymakers access information to help them make decisions and explore some of the different routes that researchers can use to engage in parliamentary processes. We will also discuss how to write an impartial summary of your research and situate your work in a wider policy context. We will work with practical examples with plenty of time for discussion.

SUMMARY:Stakeholder Mapping for Research Staff (Research Staff Development Opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:Research Staff Development Opportunities. \nUnderstanding your key stakeholders and what they want from your research is a fundamental part of any successful communications or engagement plan. This session will introduce some simple tools to help you identify and prioritise potential stakeholders and to decide how best to work with them. We will use case studies from research teams across the University and live examples from participants to show how understanding your audiences can help you to improve your research and its impact. Led by the Research Communications and Engagement team. \nThis is a new session that is currently being developed. Please reserve the date and time if you think this may be of interest to you\, as it is not yet available to book via Employee Self Service.

SUMMARY:‘Moments of Identification’: LGBTQ+ History and Heritage - Professor Richard Parkinson\, University of Oxford (Classics seminar series)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Parkinson’s lecture will illustrate the gradual evolution of an LGBT history project at the British Museum in a variety of formats\, including A Little Gay History (2013) and subsequent exhibitions and trails. It will question how LGBT histories are best displayed – as temporary interventions or as integrated parts of permanent displays – and consider the role of an ancient historian in shaping and presenting this heritage. \nRichard Bruce Parkinson is a British academic. He is currently Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford and a fellow of The Queen’s College\, Oxford. He was previously a curator in the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan\, British Museum. His main area of research in the interpretation and performance of Ancient Egyptian poetry of the classic period. As well as academic monographs and articles\, he has written popular books on Egyptology. Drawing on his work on the ‘subaltern’ aspects of ancient literature\, he has published on LGBTQ+ history across world cultures\, including A Little Gay History (2013)\, dedicated to his husband. He recently acted as consultant to No Offence: Exploring LGBTQ+ Histories\, The British Museum’s touring exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum\, Oxford\, which ran until December 2018.
