SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Sooner or Later: Shifting the Timing of Electricity Demand
DESCRIPTION:Jacopo Torriti\, Professor of Energy Economics and Policy\, School of the Built Environment \n\n\nWhen we all consume electricity at the same time\, energy suppliers have to activate dirty old power plants with excessive greenhouse gas emissions and high system costs. Shifting the timing of electricity demand is critical for balancing the grid when consumption is high and when there are drops in supply from renewables. However\, little is known about the extent to which pricing and new technologies will enable a higher level of demand-side flexibility. In this inaugural lecture\, Jacopo Torriti presents research on the timing of electricity demand\, peaks\, people’s activities and demand-side flexibility. \nThe lecture is free to attend and open to all. Registration is required in advance by emailing Sue Flanders (s.m.flanders@reading.ac.uk).

SUMMARY:That Gut Feeling: We Are Not Alone - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries. \nWe have trillions of bacteria living in our bodies\, together known as the microbiome. From birth\, they play a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy\, in protecting against pathogens and preventing diseases. They are greatly influenced by what we eat and here we will find out how to feed them and what it takes to keep them happy.

SUMMARY:From Language Learning to Loss - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.\nHow can learning new languages train your brain? What can we learn about how language is processed when the brain is damaged? Christos will explain how bilingualism can reshape the brain\, while Willemijn will talk about what happens when language is lost. If you want to learn about new research\, discovering how the brain controls language\, this is the talk for you. Suitable for all audiences- no science knowledge needed.

SUMMARY:How Did I Get Here? - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:It’s a simple question\, but to answer it properly we need to look back\, way back. Back through the fascinating history of our species\, back through the entire evolutionary history of life on earth\, back to the formation of our planet and the solar system and back still to the dawn of time itself. So join us as we look at the complicated answers to the simple question ‘How did I get here?’ \nPint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.

SUMMARY:The Heroes and Villains in our Veins - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries. \nWhat are the components that flow through our vessels? What causes the risk of cardiovascular disease? Why is snake venom so dangerous when it gets into our blood? Our speakers will look at some of these questions\, talking about this complex system and how it comes under attack from ‘villains’. We will see how all the components work together to save the day.

SUMMARY:Our Shared Planet - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Nothing survives in isolation. Every single species is utterly dependent on a complex and vast web of interactions\, and we are no exception. We are just one of the many millions of species that live on this planet and through this evening’s talks find out how we need the natural world just as much\, if not more than the natural world needs us and what happens when we come into conflict with it. \nPint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.

SUMMARY:Growing Old Gracefully: From Bones to Games - Pint of Science
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.\nGetting older is inevitable\, whether now or 1000 years ago. What happens when we grow old? How does ageing affect our physical and mental health? Is this different from in the past? The bones of our ancestors can be used to determine the life course throughout history. Getting older isn’t too bad nowadays thanks to modern technology\, especially exergames; try your hand at one of these.

DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that takes place 20-22 May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries.\nHow do natural hormones control our social behaviours? And how could we\, in the future possibly control computers with our minds? In this series of talks\, Nandini will discuss her research into brain hormones\, while Slawomir will talk about his work in computational neuroscience. Suitable for all audiences- no science knowledge needed.
