This brought together people with Parkinson\u2019s, researchers and political leaders to highlight the challenges that are still faced by individuals living with Parkinson\u2019s, their families, friends and carers despite the two centuries of research into this disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, there is still no disease modifying therapy \u2013 that is, a drug or intervention that either slows down or stops the progress of the brain cell loss that causes the symptoms of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I first started working on Parkinson\u2019s in 2005, and in the ten years or more since then I have been witness to some startling advances in our understanding of the disease, many of which have come from learning more about how our genes can influence whether we are more or less likely to develop the disease.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1603\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2017\/11\/512px-Parkinson_An_Essay_on_the_Shaking_Palsy_edit.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1603 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2017\/11\/512px-Parkinson_An_Essay_on_the_Shaking_Palsy_edit-300x291.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2017\/11\/512px-Parkinson_An_Essay_on_the_Shaking_Palsy_edit-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2017\/11\/512px-Parkinson_An_Essay_on_the_Shaking_Palsy_edit.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Parkinson first documented the disease bearing his name in &#8216;An Essay on the Shaking Palsy&#8217;. Image courtesy of Project Gutenberg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The research in my group focuses on these genetic causes of Parkinson\u2019s, and in particular mutations in a gene called Leucine Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (or LRRK2, pronounced \u201cLurk two\u201d). These mutations, which are passed down in families through DNA, are the most common genetic cause of Parkinson\u2019s \u2013 and this has made LRRK2 of great interest as a potential drug target for this disease. We\u2019re interested in how LRRK2 is involved in controlling a process called autophagy (ort-off-oh-gee), one of the ways that cells get rid of rubbish and recycle unwanted proteins.
