{"id":19119,"date":"2019-11-26T13:38:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T13:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/?p=19119"},"modified":"2020-06-05T12:55:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T11:55:23","slug":"in-pictures-pelican-books-by-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/2019\/11\/26\/in-pictures-pelican-books-by-design\/","title":{"rendered":"In pictures: Pelican books by design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Professor Paul Lickiss talks us through some striking cover designs from a new exhibition of Pelican books &#8211; the non-fiction imprint of Penguin from 1937 to 1989.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18995 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Pelican-books.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Pelican-books.jpg 800w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Pelican-books-261x300.jpg 261w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Pelican-books-768x882.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Pelican books, the non-fiction equivalents of Penguin books, are the subject of an exhibition until\u00a013 December that I have curated for the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication, to coincide with the opening of the Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing.<\/p>\n<p>Penguin Books was founded by Allen Lane and his brothers in 1935 to publish &#8220;good books, cheap&#8221;.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>They were paperback reprints of hardbacks from other publishers and were priced at 6d (2 1\/2 p) &#8211; about the price of a packet of cigarettes at the time, and a fraction the cost of the equivalent hardback.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Penguins became a great success with their well-known cover design of three horizontal bands. These two books were not simple reprints of the original hardback, as Shaw added the new chapters on Sovietism and Fascism.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the title of the books is seen as condescending.\u00a0Even in the late 1920s at least some women were also unhappy with Shaw\u2019s approach, prompting a riposte by one such &#8216;intelligent woman&#8217;, Lilian Le Mesurier, who wrote <i>The Socialist Woman\u2019s Guide to Intelligence: A Reply to Mr Shaw<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19123\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-649x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"1042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-649x1024.jpg 649w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-768x1212.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-974x1536.jpg 974w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-1298x2048.jpg 1298w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/A1-low-scaled.jpg 1623w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pelicans were published throughout the war in huge numbers and were sent to personnel in the armed forces and used for educational purposes after the war.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some of the 150 or so wartime Pelican titles include: <i>Primitive Art, Town Planning, The Childhood of Animals, The Physiology of Sex and its Social Implications, Plastics, English Justice, An Anthology of Canadian Poetry, The Biological Control of Insects, The Physical Basis of Personality, Why Smash Atoms? Thus started a long discussion within Penguin about whether their books should have pictorial covers or should remain true to their origins and be a distinctive brand without any need for pictorial adornment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 1947, the German typographer Jan Tschichold was brought in by Penguin to give some order to the increasing varied publications. Tschichold drew up a set of Penguin Composition Rules and applied them rigorously. He appointed designer Romek Marber, who came up with a new grid design that split the cover into the upper text area and a lower panel for a picture. In 2014 Penguin announced that the Pelican series would be re-established. The new series appeared in a pale blue livery, similar to, but distinct from the original Pelican blue.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Pelican device was re-drawn and the first fourteen books are plain covered paperbacks, while the next ten have a cover illustration. The exhibition\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><em>marks the launch of the new University of Reading <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/centre-for-book-cultures-and-publishing\/\">Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing<\/a>, which aims to foster cross-disciplinary research relating to publishing, printing and books.
