These are outstanding early career researchers and future research leaders, whose work is highly relevant to many aspects of our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As in previous years, the four winners came from a large pool of excellent submissions from across our research themes, and they underline the vibrancy as well as the breadth of the University\u2019s research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winners from each theme were:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agriculture, Food and Health: Dr <\/strong><strong>Athanasios Koutsos (Food and Nutrition Sciences)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19953\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/apple-a-day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/apple-a-day.jpg 640w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/apple-a-day-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/apple-a-day-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>An apple a day won&#8217;t keep the doctor away &#8211; but two might.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eating just two apples a day could help reduce your risk of heart disease, according to research carried out in 40 people with slightly raised cholesterol levels led by Dr Athanasios Koutsos.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has suggested that molecules called polyphenols and fibre found in apples could reduce heart disease risk, but this is the first high quality trial in human volunteers to report that eating apples significantly lower cholesterol and improves blood vessel health.<\/p>\n<p>The trial looked at over 35 parameters linked with heart disease including insulin, glucose, signs of inflammation and the stiffness of participants\u2019 arteries. The study findings suggest that simple changes to our diet \u2013 such as eating two apples a day &#8211; may be important for heart health.<\/p>\n<p>Original paper: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/111\/2\/307\/5675325\">Two apples a day lower serum cholesterol and improve cardiometabolic biomarkers in mildly hypercholesterolemic adults: a randomized, controlled, crossover trial<\/a>. <\/em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2019)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prosperity &amp; Resilience: Sarah von Billerbeck (Politics and International Relations)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19977\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/business-3798143_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/business-3798143_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/business-3798143_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/business-3798143_640-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Described by the judges as \u2018highly innovative,\u2019 Dr von Billerbeck\u2019s paper looks at how international organisations legitimise their own practices and goals internally to help develop and reinforce their identities, even though different aspects of their identities can sometimes contradict one another.<\/p>\n<p>Using NATO, the World Bank and the UN as case studies, the paper takes a fresh approach by looking at these organisations\u2019 self-legitimation practices rather than how they demonstrate the legitimacy of their actions to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on insights from international relations, sociology, management studies, and organizational psychology, Dr von Billerbeck argues that self-legitimation is both necessary for international organisations and crucial for our understanding of them.<\/p>\n<p>Original paper: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/isq\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/isq\/sqz089\/5666216\">Mirror, Mirror On the Wall:\u201d Self-Legitimation by International Organizations<\/a><\/em>, International Studies Quarterly (2019)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environment: Dr Robert Lee (Meteorology)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19978\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/tree-3209667_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/tree-3209667_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/tree-3209667_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/tree-3209667_640-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">In tropical regions, differing weather patterns within a season are strongly influenced by a weather circulation pattern called Madden\u2010Julian Oscillation (MJO). This weather pattern in the tropics can affect the weather thousands of miles away in Europe via\u00a0 teleconnection \u2013 a remote linkage between the MJO and the North Atlantic\u2010European (NAE) region \u2013 and this can help meteorologists make long-range weather forecasts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px;\">Seasonal climates are under the control of a different teleconnection called the El Ni\u00f1o\u2010Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This rapid proliferation and adaptation has outstripped the pace of typography design theory.<\/p>\n<p>In his book, Professor Lickiss presents a theoretical framework which describes documents as &#8216;sets&#8217; across print and digital media. Using newspapers and catalogues as contemporary case studies, the book brings together graphic design and linguistics research.<\/p>\n<p>It asks fundamental questions about the nature of documents, how they change, and what they mean.
