Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, and not being able to meet so many valued colleagues and partners in person, the Walker Institute team have continued to build our body of work: strengthening longstanding, and forging new, relationships around the world.\u00a0 Mirroring the twelve days of Christmas we\u2019ve picked our twelve highlights of 2021 \u2013 the twelve months of Walker! We hope it’s an enjoyable read and wish you all a healthy and peaceful break.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 A new collaboration with, and generous support from, Microsoft UK will help Walker Institute scientists develop more solutions to climate threats worldwide, increasing our capacity to undertake essential and impactful work. To celebrate, we held a lively launch event <\/a>including an expert\u00a0panel discussion\u00a0that reflected on\u00a0COP26 and\u00a0how technology and private public partnerships can tackle\u00a0climate crisis challenges.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Ten representatives of the University of Reading attended COP26 in-person, led by Walker Institute Director Prof Ros Cornforth. You can find a full list of the events that the Walker Institute took part in, along with the wide array of partners involved\u00a0here<\/a>. The COP\u00a0Climate Action Studio<\/a>\u00a0(COPCAS) was again\u00a0a great success\u00a0this year\u00a0–\u00a0students from the\u00a0SCENARIO<\/a>\u00a0doctoral training centre reported\u00a0and\u00a0blogged<\/a>\u00a0on events as they unfolded\u00a0at COP26, both in-person in Glasgow and from\u00a0\u2018the studio\u2019\u00a0in Reading.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Walker contributed to a chapter on\u00a0 uncertainty and the use of decision-driven approaches in East Africa<\/a> in the OECD report\u00a0on Managing Climate Risks, Facing up to Losses and Damages <\/em>launched at COP26. In Chapter four,\u00a0 we examine approaches to decision-making under uncertainty, with a case study focusing on the agricultural sector in Uganda. This is followed by a discussion of approaches to address the drivers of climate risks (hazards, exposure and vulnerability) with regards to livelihoods and well-being. Our team included Dr. Lindsay Todman from SAPD and Prof. Ted Shepherd from SMPCS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4. The final data collection for the\u00a0NIMFRU flood resilience project<\/a>\u00a0was completed. Led by our on-the-ground partner\u00a0ECOTRUST<\/a>, in-depth interviews were conducted with community members and district officers in\u00a0Katakwi, Uganda.\u00a0These interviews will allow us to better understand the impact that the NIMFRU project has had on the lives of local people, assess how the project\u2019s findings have been used to improve district policies and processes, and\u00a0identify\u00a0areas that need further research and development.<\/p>\n

5. The\u00a0Walker Academy<\/a> ran the\u00a0Assessing Livelihood Vulnerability to Extreme Shocks<\/a>\u00a0(ALiVE) course. The course, which was run in partnership with\u00a0Evidence for Development<\/a>,\u00a0provided an introduction to\u00a0the\u00a0Household Economy Approach<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/u>Individual Household Method<\/a>, both used to analyse the resilience\u00a0of rural livelihoods to climate shocks\u00a0for\u00a0students from the UK,\u00a0Uganda\u00a0and Kenya.<\/p>\n

6. Voted the best new metric using non-traditional observations, a Walker Institute \/ University of Reading\u00a0project\u00a0\u2018Semi-quantitative information on flood impact for verification of flood events: Case study of Uganda\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0was selected as the\u00a0winner of a World Meteorological Organization\u00a0(WMO) Challenge Competition<\/a>.\u00a0The flood warnings it informs can be the difference\u00a0between life and death for\u00a0thousands of people\u00a0caught in the path of an approaching\u00a0flood and\u00a0used to inform decisions to protect livelihoods.<\/p>\n

7. We are delighted\u00a0that\u00a0Dr Aida Opoku-Mensah joined the Walker Institute<\/a> as a new Board member. She brings substantial knowledge and a formidable network of contacts to help steer and develop our climate adaptation research work with colleagues in Africa and elsewhere. Dr Opoku-Mensah was, until recently, Chief of Staff at United Nations Economic Commission for Africa<\/a> (UNECA). Read an interview with Aida by our COPCAS students\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

8. Walker Institute Director,\u00a0Prof Ros Cornforth<\/a>, presented at\u00a0the\u00a0Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2021<\/a>.\u00a0She\u00a0spoke about the World Climate Research Programme\u2019s\u00a0\u2018My Climate Risk\u2019\u00a0lighthouse activity<\/a>, which is co-chaired by\u00a0University of Reading\u2019s\u00a0Prof Ted Shepherd.<\/a>\u00a0Ros discussed the need for climate scientists to foster long-term, interdisciplinary partnerships to allow climate risk assessments to begin from a detailed understanding of the\u00a0\u2018vulnerability first\u2019\u00a0local context\u00a0rather than the \u2018predict then act\u2019 model.<\/p>\n

9. The Walker Institute team has started work on a multi-partner project with Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, entitled\u00a0 \u2018Boosting Agriculture Risk Mitigation in Bangladesh Through Climate Index Insurance for Smallholders.\u2019 The work includes the development of a methodology of analysis to test the effectiveness of an insurance product in protecting people and capacity building through the Walker Academy which will provide farmer and actuary training schools on climate resilience that will be embedded in local institutions. The project is co-funded by InsuResilience\u00a0Solutions<\/a> Fund.<\/p>\n

10. A new NERC-funded Global Seedcorn partnerships project, Treetops<\/a> aims to establish a collaborative, interdisciplinary partnership between leading researchers from Uganda (Makerere University and EcoTrust) and the UK in climate, forest and livelihoods research. The research includes an assessment of the resilience of different Forestry Landscape Restoration approaches to climate impacts in Masindi, Uganda an area which, despite a focus on \u2018nature based solutions\u2019 to the climate emergency, has received very little attention.<\/p>\n

11. In partnership with the UN Environment Programme and Wood plc, we have been leading on the development of climate risk assessments in Iraq to \u00a0build local adaptive capacity whilst contributing to the mainstreaming of regional and national adaptation efforts and an appreciation of climate change risks. This research is part of a larger programme<\/a> to support the implementation of National Adaptation Plans for several countries across Asia-Pacific. It involves modelling the possible impacts of different climate change scenarios for a range of sectors and ecosystems. Capacity building is an essential element to help each country develop fully functional climate services.<\/p>\n

12. At the Walker Institute, we have a strong team ethic which has continued successfully through the challenges of the pandemic. In recent months we have welcomed new members including researchers Elena Saggioro and Will Shears, and operational team members Gerard Stewart, Marah McGuire and Konstantina Pratta.
