One such example is funerary services, including public cemeteries and crematoria.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26047 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2023\/01\/CEMI-logo.jpg\" alt=\"The letters CEMI in white against a multiplicity of religious symbols in black above a tree and two benches.\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2023\/01\/CEMI-logo.jpg 512w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2023\/01\/CEMI-logo-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2023\/01\/CEMI-logo-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Three parallel funerals trends are particularly evident in West European funerals: firstly, a wider range of religious beliefs and practices; secondly, increased secularization; and thirdly, widespread adoption of cremation in many countries (in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cremation.org.uk\/\">cremation accounted for 78% of all funerals in the UK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While cremation is favoured by the majority of the population, including Hindus and Sikhs, burial is a requirement for other religious groups such as those of the Baha\u2019i, Jewish and Muslim faiths, and is a strong preference for others, including most Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians. Moreover, these faith groups typically seek perpetual grave rights \u2013 that is, assurance their graves won\u2019t be disturbed.<\/p>\n<h3>Why are there different funeral rituals?<\/h3>\n<p>These different cemetery and crematorium needs and the importance of having particular rituals \u2013 or none \u2013 are outlined in this short animation &#8216;Why are there different funeral rituals?&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y1NUryYTuz4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These varied practices and needs raise a number of questions about how inclusive any given local authority, region or country\u2019s cemetery\u2013crematorium provision is.<\/p>\n<p>And what can service-providers, landscape designers and planners do to meet evolving needs?
