Over 7,800 events are being held across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Here at the University of Reading we have a long tradition in supporting Parliamentary activities. That includes our academics providing expert advice to senior officials, or submitting written or oral research-based evidence to select committees and consultations. Researchers also raise important issues across society or the environment to MPs within All Party Parliamentary Groups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specialist knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the last week, Professor Gavin Parker (Real Estate and Planning) was the sole academic expert to give oral evidence on his <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/neighbourhoodplanning\/\">Neighbourhood Planning<\/a> research at the House of Lords Rural Economy Select Committee. Professor Parker\u2019s research includes access to affordable housing in rural areas and his evidence (<a href=\"https:\/\/parliamentlive.tv\/event\/index\/1722d35c-5dea-4065-a797-492ffec58fdb\">which can be viewed here from 10 minutes 54 seconds<\/a>) was used during the session to highlight inconsistences in local authority support for Neighbourhood Planning and concerns over social inclusion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Astor\u2019s legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4056\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4056\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4056 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Lady-Astors-Election-Campaign-1919_public-domain-1024x770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Lady-Astors-Election-Campaign-1919_public-domain.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Lady-Astors-Election-Campaign-1919_public-domain-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/research-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/Unorganized\/Lady-Astors-Election-Campaign-1919_public-domain-768x578.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lady Astor, the subject of Dr Jacqui Turner&#8217;s #Astor100 project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>University of Reading research also plays an important part in recognising the history of British democracy in Parliament.\u00a0 Dr Jacqui Turner (History) is leading a celebration of 100 years of women in parliament through the UK management of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/astor100\/\">Astor100 programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Turner\u2019s centenary research on the history of pioneering female MPs during the interwar period focuses on Lady Nancy Astor, the first woman to take her seat\u00a0as MP for Plymouth Sutton, in 1919.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Astor Papers from the University\u2019s Special Collections, Dr Turner\u2019s work has supported the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdfunder.co.uk\/lady-astor-statue-100-campaign\">Astor Statue Campaign<\/a>. This is a crowdfunded initiative to raise a statue to Nancy Astor in her Plymouth constituency as a legacy to her influence in British politics. Dr Turner\u2019s influence\u00a0also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-devon-46065400\">secured backing for the statue project from Prime Minister Theresa May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Political voices in Reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the festival, Dr Mark Shanahan (Politics and International Relations) is hosting two events as part of the Political Voices series. The first, taking place today at 4.15, opens up the division\u2019s research seminar to ex-UUP MP\/MLA Danny Kinahan, who will be discussing Irish politics and Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The second, on Thursday, will feature Conservative MP for Bracknell Dr Phillip Lee, the ex- Junior Minister for Justice who resigned in July 2018 over the Chequers proposal for Brexit.
