The Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing at the University of Reading has released the\u00a0full programme<\/a>\u00a0for their inaugural Summer School to be held on 20 and 21 June 2023. The event will be held at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication and Special Collections at the University.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cultures of the book: lithography, consumption, reading\u2019<\/b>\u00a0will\u00a0explore how books have been made, consumed and read following the invention of lithography in the early nineteenth century. Talks by leading scholars and practitioners will be combined with a hands-on approach using the University\u2019s collections and archives.<\/p>\n

Keynote speakers include\u00a0Prof Rathna Ramanathan<\/a>\u00a0on \u2018Beyond the margins: Intercultural collaborations in independent publishing\u2019 and\u00a0Prof Michael Twyman<\/a>\u00a0talking about lithography and printed ephemera.<\/p>\n

Other talks will cover the origins of today\u2019s typefaces and text\/picture integration (Paul Luna), as well as book-related ephemera popular in the late nineteeth and early twentieth century \u2013 the \u2018Birthday Book\u2019 (C\u0103t\u0103lina Zlotea)\u00a0 and bookplates (Liz West).<\/p>\n

Practical sessions on lithographic printing will be available (Geoff Wyeth and Borna Izadpanah), together with \u2018hands-on\u2019 examination of book-related printed ephemera (with materials in English and French) from the Centre for Ephemera Studies (Emma Minns).<\/p>\n

Participants will also be able to view the exhibition \u2018Evolution of the Chinese Typeform\u2019 (curated by Xunchang Cheng).<\/p>\n
