Thursday 1 November, at 19:00,\u00a0the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies will be holding its 6th annual public lecture to mark Armistice Day and the Centenary of the First World War. <\/span><\/p>\n

The title of the lecture is:\u00a0<\/span>RUSSIA AND THE FIRST\u00a0WORLD<\/span><\/span>\u00a0WAR<\/span><\/span>: A FATAL MISTAKE?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This year’s distinguished speaker\u00a0is\u00a0Professor Dominic Lieve<\/strong>n, Senior Research Fellow, Trinity College, Cambridge and Fellow of the British Academy. Professor Lieven\u00a0is a eminent\u00a0Historian of Russia with award-winning books. In this public lecture, Professor Lieven will\u00a0tell us the fascinating, dramatic and hugely important story of Russia\u2019s descent into the First\u00a0World<\/span><\/span>\u00a0War<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and its fatal impact on generations of Russians in the long twentieth century. Professor Lieven\u2019s close study of diaries, letters, books and official documents give a very different interpretation of the First\u00a0World<\/span><\/span>\u00a0War<\/span><\/span>, from an Eastern perspective, and shows the underestimated role of Russia\u2019s leaders in the Great\u00a0War<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The series is intended to\u00a0enhance the bonds between the University and the local community, and to highlight the\u00a0First World War as a focal point of\u00a0research in\u00a0the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies. <\/span><\/p>\n
