About RSE
What is an RSE?
Software is fundamental to research. From the humanities to physics, biology to archaeology, software plays a vital role in generating results. Not all researchers can become skilled software engineers, so a new role has developed in academia: the Research Software Engineer (RSE). RSEs combine an intricate understanding of research with expertise in programming and software engineering.
Am I an RSE?
An RSE is anyone who deals with software or writes code, who has desire to share their knowledge with others and improve the quality and scientific validity of software for research across the board.
What does RSE@UoR do?
- We are undertaking initiatives to improve standards in coding/ research software by developing a sustainable program of courses, tutorials, workshops and online resources.
- We aim to foster a software community of practice at the University, e.g. by helping departments to set up coding clubs and sharing of skills and resources.
- We fundamentally support the University’s commitment to the aims and principles of Open Research and are part of the Open Research Action Plan.
