Architecture and AI: when (not) to trust a machine<\/p>\n

Architects have long been both fascinated with and distrustful of computers assisting in the design process. Despite the obvious benefits of automation, relinquishing control to a machine seems to run counter to the \u2018master\u2019 architect. This is in part justified; architecture as a discipline is not a problem solving exercise, but somewhere between the quantitative and qualitative, the knowable and complex. In this talk, recent examples in both evolutionary design and machine learning (both supervised and non-supervised) will be discussed that attempt to address this middle-ground. How can computing machines work with humans to embrace the complexity of architectural design without diluting it, and what parts of the design process are explainable, if any?<\/p>\n
