The discussion recording lasts 60 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>References mentioned in the introduction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erving Goffman\u2019s book &#8211; <em>Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity<\/em> (1963)<\/li>\n<li>Jenny Morris\u2019s book &#8211; <em>Pride Against Prejudice: Transforming Attitudes to Disability<\/em> (1991)<\/li>\n<li>Tom Shakepeare, Dominic Davies and Kath Gillespie-Sells\u2019 groundbreaking book &#8211; <em>Sexual Politics of Disability: Untold Desires<\/em> (1996)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"work-meta\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"desc\"><strong style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">LUX X CFAC presents Dwoskin, disability, and\u2026accessibility: <em>Face of Our Fear\u00a0<\/em>as part of the AHRC-funded project, <em>The Legacies of Stephen Dwoskin<\/em>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is the first in a series of rare screenings and discussion events exploring the experimental filmmaker Stephen Dwoskin\u2019s complex relationships with disability, accessibility, care, illness, and sexuality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">First shown on the launch night of Channel 4\u2019s \u2018Disabling World\u2019 season in 1992, <em><b>Face of Our Fear<\/b><\/em> is an essay film about media representations of disability from antiquity to the modern era. Far from being a standard documentary, it is peppered with personal touches, surreal scenes, and echoes of Dwoskin\u2019s underground films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dwoskin did not want to be regarded as \u2018a disabled filmmaker\u2019, complaining to one interviewer that \u2018everyone began starting their articles about me, announcing the fact, \u201cHe got polio in 1948 at the age of ten,\u201d even friends do it\u2019. This tension is present throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/lux.org.uk\/work\/face-of-our-fear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><b>Face of Our Fear<\/b><\/em><\/a>, which he saw as a film about stigmatization.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The film also probes the social model of disability: the cultural narratives that pinion disabled people as victims, villains, freaks, and monsters, and the ableist and disabling built and social environments that become sites of daily negotiation.
