Selecting the link will take you directly to the Integrated Archaeological DataBase record for the find.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Candlestick:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF00583\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF583<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy candlestick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ceramics:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04119\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04119<\/a>\u00a0is the base of a tiny ceramic vessel with a stamp on the underside. It is possibly from the east of Gaul.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03192\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF03192<\/a>\u00a0is a ceramic rim sherd of mortaria. It is stamped ARINV and this may mean it is from the workshop of Marinus from Verulamium and dates to around 80-125AD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coin:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04391\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04391<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy coin dating to between 64-68AD. It features Nero as Caesar Augustus on one side and Victory holding a shield on the other.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04706\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4706<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy coin, a dupondius of Augustus. It was minted at Nemausus (modern Nimes) between 20BC and 14AD. It has been deliberately cut in half. Halving coins in this way was rare but sometimes occurred during the late Republican, Augustan and Tiberian times due to a shortage of new bronze coinage. SF03573 is a copper alloy coin dating to between AD287-90. It is unworn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cosmetic grinder:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04834\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4834<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy cosmetic grinder in excellent condition. It is of the end loop type with the stylised head of a water bird.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dishes:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03166\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3166<\/a>\u00a0fragments of black burnish ware fish dish. Dates to late 2nd &#8211; early 3rd century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dice:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04548\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04548<\/a>\u00a0is a bone die, crudely made and quite worn. The spots have double concentric circles around them and all the sides add up to 7.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05151\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF05151<\/a>\u00a0is also very worn so much so that some damage has been repaired in Roman times but there is still a large crack visible. Two of the sides are so worn that they can hardly be seen, it must have been used a lot! The sides also add up to seven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earrings:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03787\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3787<\/a>\u00a0is a cast, copper alloy, earring.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03787\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4449<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy earring dating to the 1st century AD made from one single length of wire coiled around itself, with the end forming the ear hook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finger rings:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF01607\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF1607<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy octagonal ring with no decoration.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03822\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3822<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy ring with the remains of a green glass setting.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03984\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3984<\/a>\u00a0is a complete iron ring with a carnelian intaglio. The engraving depicts a possible huntsman figure carrying a staff and a pig\/deer.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02535\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2535<\/a>is a copper alloy ring with traces of enamelling.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF01621\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF1621<\/a>\u00a0is a silver ridged ring of the Late Roman period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Furniture Fittings:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02882\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2882<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; iron ring, possibly furniture fitting.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03165\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3165<\/a>\u00a0bone hinge, possibly for wooden chest.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04125\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4125<\/a>\u00a0Copper alloy handle. 1st-2nd century AD.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05065\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4345<\/a>\u00a0Copper alloy stud, possibly from furniture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaming counters:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF01260\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF01260<\/a>\u00a0is a small, opaque, black glass counter.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03515\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3515<\/a>\u00a0is an opaque yellow glass counter. The colour is unusual in Britain but was popular in the Augusto-Tiberian period on the continent.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02978\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF02978<\/a>\u00a0is a bone gaming counter with a flat base and a concave obverse side. The top has a small hole in centre. The base has 5 small holes and a star etched into it. The side has XIII etched into it and this may mean 13 if the side with the star is the top.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04114\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04114<\/a>\u00a0is a pierced pottery counter of coarse fabric. It was made by grinding down a sherd of a pot. Although pierced, it is too light to be a loomweight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glass:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04108\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04108<\/a>\u00a0is a very fine green\/blue, glass vessel handle with part of the rim still attached.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03780\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF03780<\/a>\u00a0is the handle of a small globular bath flask that would have originally had two looped handles. It dates to around AD50-250.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hairpin:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03023\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3023<\/a>\u00a0is a silver hairpin from between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The tip is a stylised hand with the thumb and first finger holding a ball that might represent a globe or fruit.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03915\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3915<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy hairpin.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05040\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF5040<\/a>\u00a0is an iron hairpin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intaglio:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02908\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2908<\/a>\u00a0is an intaglio made of jasper, dating to the 2nd century and showing a portrait of a lady.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04585\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4585<\/a>\u00a0is an iron ring with remains of a yellow glass setting. It depicts the conjoined heads of a horse, boar and hound. This sort of depiction was designed to evoke prosperity and divert the evil eye. It may date to between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04676\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4676<\/a>\u00a0is a cornelian intaglio set in an iron ring. It shows a female centaur facing a shrine, standing on a rocky outcrop and with her back to a tree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keys:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03755\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3755<\/a>\u00a0iron latch lifter.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04117\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4117<\/a>\u00a0iron slide key, very corroded.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05350\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF5350<\/a>\u00a0iron key.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF01261\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF1261<\/a>\u00a0Iron tumbler lock lift key.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF01734\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF01734<\/a>\u00a0is a folding knife\/razor with a zoomorphic ivory handle in the form of two mating dogs. It dates to the 2nd century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Knives:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04264\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4264<\/a>\u00a0is a bone knife handle with part of the blade still attached.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03753\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3753<\/a>\u00a0is a virtually complete iron knife, although it is heavily encrusted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lamps:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03037\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3037<\/a>\u00a0lead open lamp slotted onto tripod candlestick, 2nd century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plaster:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02967\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2967<\/a>\u00a0Painted wall plaster, all dark red. Some pieces have dark and light green patterning or a thin yellow line.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02200\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2200<\/a>\u00a0Painted wall plaster, black and red.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quernstones:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04500\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4500 and SF4974<\/a>\u00a0are fragments of quernstones, which would have been used to grind material such as grain.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03535\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3535<\/a>\u00a0shale tray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samian:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04169\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04169<\/a>\u00a0is a piece of Gaulish samian with SILVIP stamped on the base. This may represent the potter Silvius II of Lezoux.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shoes:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04411\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4411<\/a>\u00a0is the leather remains of the upper part of a shoe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spoons:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05074\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF5074<\/a>\u00a0is a bone spoon.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02767\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2767<\/a>\u00a0is a bone spoon of the 1st 2nd century.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03052\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF3052<\/a>\u00a0is a bone spoon &#8211; you can see both the back and front views.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steelyard arm:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF4551\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04551<\/a>\u00a0is a possible iron steelyard arm. A rectangular sectioned arm leads in the centre to a curved section with a hole pierced through it, leading to the second arm which is square in section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strainers:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02958\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF2958<\/a>\u00a0(the first three images) show a copper alloy strainer plate from a bowl, dating to around AD40-60.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04290\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF4290<\/a>\u00a0is a copper alloy wine strainer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stopper:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03876\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF03876<\/a>\u00a0is a possible bone stopper with two incised lines around the circumference on the top and bottom. It is very similar to SF03864, which also has incised lines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toilet Sets:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF05415\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF05415<\/a>\u00a0is a nail cleaner and ear scoop from a toilet set.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF03903\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF03903<\/a>\u00a0is a set of tweezers and ear scoop.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF02942\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF02942<\/a>\u00a0is a complete set dating to the 1st century AD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unguent jars:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/silchester\/i3\/item.php?ID=IADB:SILCH:FSF04017\" target=\"smallwin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">SF04017<\/a>\u00a0is a complete rim from a conical glass unguent bottle. The glass looks almost clear as it is so thin but is actually a blue\/green colour.
