Our <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/social-licence-for-business\/project-documents\/\">consultation document, &#8220;A Social Licence for Business\u201d,<\/a> explains why we need to reshape the relationship between business and society after COVID-19. In addition, we propose the \u201cSocial Licence Model\u201d as a useful framework for reforms.<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, governments across the globe have stepped in as buyer and lender of last resort for private sector firms. Governments have taken on huge debt for future taxpayers. This support is both welcome and necessary. However, it should also lead to an urgent conversation about the proper relationship between business and society. More specifically, we need to explore ways in which the power of business to do good can be harnessed to help us meet the very significant challenges society faces.<\/p>\n<p>Our key findings are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a need to \u2018build back better\u2019 post-pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>However, current regulatory moves are insufficient to achieve this.<\/li>\n<li>Steps in the right direction are being taken \u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 but reshaping business-state relations requires rethinking the private sector\u2019s social contract.<\/li>\n<li>The social licence model could provide the necessary framework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The document, with full references, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/social-licence-for-business\/project-documents\/\">can be found here.<\/a> Also, you can find more <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/social-licence-for-business\/what-is-a-social-licence-for-business\/\">information on the project and the social licence model here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We welcome your thoughts and feedback.
