social change, we should research and analyse the particular contribution made by music. Does it, as some seem to suggest, provide a ‘soundtrack’ to social history, merely illustrating the ‘real’ business of change; or does it play a more direct part in constituting identities and mobilising action? To answer such questions, the symposium will draw on expertise from political science, sociology, history and music studies to develop a framework for the analysis of music’s role.
