{"id":1072,"date":"2026-03-19T09:50:40","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T09:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/transnational-families\/?p=1072"},"modified":"2026-03-25T10:27:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T10:27:45","slug":"english-language-education-needs-to-be-more-accessible-for-migrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/transnational-families\/english-language-education-needs-to-be-more-accessible-for-migrants\/","title":{"rendered":"English language education needs to be more accessible for migrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are delighted to publish our new Policy Brief, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/128513\">English language education needs to be more accessible for migrants<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our research with 30 migrant families with a disability or care need in England has demonstrated the multiple barriers to learning English that migrants experience. Not being able to access English language teaching \u00a0has major impacts on carers\u2019 and other family members\u2019 wellbeing, employment opportunities and social integration. It also increases the reliance on family members, including children, for interpreting in health, social care and school settings, despite safeguarding and confidentiality concerns. Our research recommends improving the coordination and accessibility of English for Speakers of Other Languages \u00a0(ESOL) provision at local and regional levels.
