Project Details

This project investigates the challenges and opportunities for women’s leadership in climate action in Kenya. Stakeholder engagement is at the heart of the project to ensure inclusive and context-specific solutions.

Research was undertaken through a series of facilitated online Focus Group and Round Table discussions. Our engagement spanned multiple levels, including local communities, government agencies, civil society organisations, private sector actors, academic institutions, researchers and students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The research examined the impact of cultural, socio-economic, and institutional barriers that hinder women’s participation in leadership roles in climate-related initiatives. Qualitative data were collected over a four month period in 2024 through interviews, focus groups, and stakeholder roundtables involving women leaders, NGOs, government agencies, academics, and community organisations. The scope of the research primarily focused on urban and rural women engaged in climate action leadership in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, disaster response, and climate education in Kenya.

By fostering dialogue across these sectors, the project aimed to create meaningful and sustainable pathways toward gender-equitable climate leadership, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that target gender equality, climate action, descent work and economic growth in Kenya.

The findings will be used to inform future strategies and initiatives to strengthen gender equality and women’s leadership in climate action in Kenya.
