Our dedicated Archaeological Proteomics wet lab is based in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Reading (Whiteknights campus). Here, we photograph and record all archaeological material before sampling. ZooMS generally requires small sample sizes (~5 mg, half a grain of rice). We are set up to perform high-throughput collagen extraction and peptide purification using 96-well plates.
We collaborate with the University’s Chemical Analysis Facility (CAF) for our Mass Spectrometry analysis. We use a Waters Select Series Maldi with advanced Multi Reflecting Time-of-Flight (MRT) technology to obtain high-resolution collagen fingerprints for ZooMS taxonomic identifications.
We always welcome new projects and you can contact Karen to discuss applications of proteomics (e.g. ZooMS) to specific sets of archaeological materials from any time period or geographic region.
