In April, Frankie Tait (PhD Student) and Anna Wagner (PhD Student) travelled to Belgrade to sample fragmented bone material from key Pleistocene cave sites around Serbia. This work was carried out in collaboration with Prof. Dušan Mihailović at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy

For the COEXIST project we focused on sampling bone material from 4 sites, most of them still being excavated:

  1. Kozja pećina (goat cave)
  2. Mala pećina (small cave)
  3. Pešturina
  4. Šalitrena Pećina

Overall, we plan to analyse ca. 1,000 bones from these sites to study butchery behaviours of the humans sheltering in the cave. We are very grateful to the other researchers at the University of Belgrade who helped us all week with sorting and selecting bones.
