On the 27th of October, Dr Alex Arnall published a piece in The Conversation discussing his research on the impacts of environmental change on local communities in the Maldives.

Whilst much of the international discourse about small island states during COP26 is set to centre around the issue of rising sea levels, the article examines the multitude of other pressing environmental challenges faced by Maldivians.

Many of these problems, which include beach erosion and plastic pollution, are caused, or compounded by ongoing coastal development across the archipelago.

Arnall concludes that failure to address these immediate issues could ultimately undermine the Maldives’ ability to cope with the long-term impacts of climate change.
