University of Reading’s Special Collections show their spooky side for Halloween

31st October 2018 News, Tay Noronha

The University of Reading‘s museums, collections and academic experts have been sharing their spooky treasures and tales for Halloween.

They’ve been taking part in the #HalloweenHumanities campaign on Twitter in the run-up to the Being Human festival, which will take place in late November.

Some of the posts feature gems from our collections, including this copy of The Were-Wolf by Clemence Houseman from 1896:

Beware the full moon! Published in 1896, The Were-Wolf is part of our Printing Collection. It was written by Clemence Houseman, suffragette & co-founder of the Suffrage Atelier. #Halloween #HalloweenEve #HalloweenHumanities pic.twitter.com/yxTOLpnnip

Dr Andrew Mangham (English Literature) and Dr Dan Renshaw (History) teamed up to record a podcast on ‘The Haunted Room’ and Gothic literature in the 19th century. Special Collections holds a beautiful 1894 edition of ‘The Haunted Room’, written by Charlotte Maria Tucker, who went by the pen name of A Lady of England:
