Dr. Anna Sommer (Denvil-Sommer)

Research Scientist (NCAS)

I obtained my PhD in Physical Oceanography at the LOCEAN (France) in 2016. After my PhD I started to work with the application of Machine Learning in the Earth System Sciences.  I worked on the application of Machine Learning to reconstruct the ocean pCO2 (H2020, AtlantOS project; LSCE, France) and on the improvement of the ocean model meso-scale parameterisation using global ocean model NEMO (Project Hermès founded under the Make Our Planet Great Again grant; CEA, France). In 2020-2023 I worked on the improvement of global biogeochemical model PlankTOM using Machine Learning and observations at the University of East Anglia (UK).My research interests:
Ocean and climate modelling, particularly high-resolution modelling.Meso-scale variability: role of meso-scale processes in large-scale circulation and its representation in climate models.Machine Learning: improvement of parameterisation in ocean models; use in spin-up strategies.
