Dr. David Mason
Postdoctoral Research Assistant EOCIS Project (NCEO)
David is working with Prof. Sarah Dance on a project funded under EO-CIS concerned with using deep learning for floodwater detection in urban areas using Sentinel-1 SAR and the WorldDEM dataset. This should allow the detection of urban flooding on a global scale. At present operational services are mainly aimed at flood mapping in rural areas, because mapping in urban areas is hampered by the complicated backscattering mechanisms occurring there. However, it’s in the urban areas where the people and the assets mainly are. We’ve previously developed a prototype method for detecting urban flooding which uses double scatterers. In this project we hope to improve the method and make it fully automatic using deep learning.
David is a physicist who’s worked for University of Reading in the Depts. of Geography and Meteorology since 1985, latterly working on remote sensing in hydrology.”
