Laboratory Services

Specialist assessment and analysis of archaeological, geoarchaeological, and palaeoenvironmental materials recovered during field investigations. Services include:

  • Geoarchaeological analysis – examining sediments and soils to interpret depositional processes, site formation, landscape evolution, and the preservation of archaeological remains. This includes sediment description, stratigraphic interpretation, and laboratory-based sediment characterisation.
  • Palaeoenvironmental assessment and analysis – analysing environmental remains such as pollen, plant macrofossils, insects, diatoms, ostracods, molluscs, and other biological indicators to reconstruct past environments, climates, and land use.
  • Chronology and dating – selecting and preparing suitable samples for radiocarbon, Pb210, optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL), and other chronological techniques, and integrating dating results into archaeological and environmental interpretations.
  • Micromorphology and specialist sediment analysis – preparing and analysing undisturbed soil and sediment samples, including thin-section micromorphology where appropriate, to investigate depositional processes and archaeological contexts at a microscopic scale.
  • Environmental sample processing – processing bulk and column samples recovered during fieldwork to identify and quantify macroscopic environmental and archaeological remains.
