Frequently Asked Questions
Customers of the OTTLE cells are directed to the manual received with their purchase which will answer many questions regarding operation of any of our cells. Below are some of the most frequent questions we receive.
Q: What scan rate should the cell be operated at?
A: We recommend for nearly all activities, a scan rate of 2 mV/s.
Q: Why do the cells need to be masked?
A: The function of the mask is to block absorption from both the non-electrolysed solution surrounding the working electrode and from any species generated at the counter electrode.
Q: What are the optical windows made of?
A: As standard, all our cells are equipped with CaF2 optical windows, although other materials are available on request.
Q: Which solvents can be used with our cells?
A: They are chemically resistant to all common organic solvents. The cells are also designed for use in more exotic media, such as ionic liquids.
Q: Which are the best solvents for low-temperature spectroelectrochemistry?
A: The solvents butyronitrile (PrCN), dichloromethane (DCM) & 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran are well-suited to this task.
