Tablet-based App

STREAM (Scalable TRansdiagnostic Early Assessment of Mental health) is a multi-year MRC funded project to assess child neurodevelopment in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) using open-source, scalable, mobile-technology. The tablet-based app will combine and build upon existing screening tools (DEEP, INDIGO, START) developed by members of the STREAM project team.

Highly Intuitive

This tool will be easy to use, and will be delivered by minimally trained health-workers.

Multilingual

The app is designed to be scalalable for different languages. It will be available in English, Hindi and Chichewa.

Engaging

The STREAM app will be engaging for children, comprising various game-style tests, questionnaires, and observations.

Hybrid Parental Interview Methods

The app has in-built features to customise questionnaires, interviews and free play observations. The free-play section provides an opportunity to video-record parent-child play interaction for subsequent analysis.

Precise motor responses & Eye-tracking

The app utilises the latest technology to record high-resolution motor responses from children when playing simple games, and collects sophisticated data on eye-movements to measure visual preference and attention.

Goals

Many children in LMIC with developmental disorders are undetected, due to a scarcity of highly-skilled professionals, creating a ‘detection gap.’ The STREAM project aims to address this detection gap in LMIC and aims to improve risk screening for various developmental disorders that may be evident during the early developmental period. It will be used to map the population distribution scores in key developmental domains in 0-6 year old children in India and Malawi.
