Plymouth has launched an appeal to build a statue to commemorate 100 years since Lady Nancy Astor became the first female MP to take her seat in Parliament. The people of Plymouth intend to mark the centenary of her election with the creation of a lasting memorial.

The campaign is backed by the UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May and a number of prominent MPs.

Plymouth has very few statues of women and this is intended to be a signature piece of public art that will generate an inspiring legacy, encouraging young women and girls to believe a future in public service is open to them as well as celebrating Nancy Astor and Plymouth.

The design of the statue will be put to a public design competition.
