About

Cardiovascular diseases which include heart attacks, strokes and heart failure, are the cause of approximately 200 000 deaths each year in the UK, with similar incidence rates across Europe and North America.

The Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (ICMR) is a multidisciplinary centre that brings together scientists from a wide range of research fields to work and understand the development of cardiovascular diseases, and the underlying metabolic diseases from which they develop. Our teams conduct world-leading research into fundamental cellular biology and the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Our research has a major focus on integrative physiology and pharmacology at the cell level through to whole in-vivo systems, using a variety of techniques from microscopy in individual cells to studies examining cellular function in a range of animal model systems including zebrafish and mice, through to translational studies in humans.

our research outputs are consistently recognised on an international level, and our researchers play leading roles in the cardiovascular community, supported by funding from government, charities and collaboration with our industrial partners from around the world.

we are also providing exceptional training for future generations of researchers with an active community of around 200 PhD, post-doctoral and fellowship schemes.
