Dr Wieczorkiewicz is a researcher in a Polish National Science Centre project (Half a Century of Children’s Literature in Poland. Texts for a young audience in the context of cultural production and power: the recipient of literature – literature as a recipient; 2022–2026) in which the study of children’s press and the contribution of translated literature is an important component. Her doctoral dissertation focussed on the English children’s literature of the Golden Age and its translational reception in Poland (The Golden Pens: Works of George MacDonald, James Matthew Barrie and Cicely Mary Barker, Their Polish Reception and New Translations; July 2022), thus providing a solid foundation for the study of Victorian children’s literature.
She will be drawing upon the children’s collections to work on a project entitled ‘Translator’s Own Paper? Translated Literature in British Children’s Periodicals of the Victorian Era’.
The aim of the proposed project is to explore British children’s periodicals of the Victorian era in order to assess the proportion of translated literature represented in them: which authors were translated, from which languages and cultural contexts; which types of texts were most often subject to interlingual transfer; what were the subsequent stages of reception of a given text/author – whether publication in a periodical opened the way to book publication and enabled a wider readership; who were the translators working for periodicals; in which periodicals the share of translated literature was the highest, and what this tells us about the ways in which young audience were shaped by various authorities active in the field of juvenile culture. The research will result in outlining a map of contacts and literary transfers between English literature and other languages and literatures, a subject only rarely reflected upon in the context of children’s press.
