Registration is now open for the 2025 Type Design intensive (TDi) summer course which will take place in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading from 7–11 July and 21–25 July 2025.
The course involves one or two weeks of a deep dive into typeface design as multiscript practice, and field of research. It is suitable for academics, researchers, and individuals preparing for PhD study who are developing a research project, publication, or proposal. Additionally, for those with broader interests, the course will help build skills for qualitative work with archives and constructing narratives from material evidence.
You will learn about methodologies for effectively working with and interpreting primary sources, including unconventional material, ephemera, and digital evidence. You will also develop practical thinking skills, such as holding, looking at, and observing material. The sessions support new narratives that combine materiality and reframe existing concepts.
- Week 1 is ideal for experienced designers who can make the most of a masterclass with expert feedback, and want to understand how to design across scripts.
- Week 2 is tailored to those who want to learn about the research dimensions of type design, and academics, current or future PhD students, and independent researchers. The two weeks can be taken independently or as a set.
These are not introductory courses. We host an intensive learning environment for a small group, with world-class tutors and unique archival material to hand. The combination of expertise and resources that are available at the TDi are only available otherwise to those studying at Reading for longer programmes, so this is a rare opportunity to expand skills, knowledge, and understanding of global type design.
