Call for PhD Project Ideas

Call for AFESP Doctoral Training Programme PhD Project Ideas

AFESP is establishing a long-term Doctoral Training Programme to develop skills in the fundamental new research across the physical, mathematical and computational sciences that will be required to address next-generation challenges in Earth system prediction and operational weather and climate forecasting – with the launch of next cohort of AFESP DTP studentships offering up to ten PhD students to commence in Autumn 2025.

We now wish to encourage PhD project ideas from interested supervisors & co-supervisors (N.B. The lead supervisor must be from the University of Reading) and invite brief project Expressions of Interest (EoIs), which can be submitted by completing the EoI form by Thursday 28th November 2024.

Project EoIs should align with at least one AFESP Theme and supervisors are encouraged to review the AFESP Science Plan.

• Theme 1: Predicting the Earth System up to the sub-seasonal range
• Theme 2: Challenges and opportunities in simulating the Earth System at the kilometre-scale
• Theme 3: Data assimilation for the Earth system across a range of scales

We strongly encourage early co-creation of EoIs and will accept project ideas initiated by partner organisations (ECMWF, Met Office, NCAS). However, this is not an absolute requirement at EoI stage and will not affect your chances for success.

The lead supervisor must be from the University of Reading (includes NCAS and NCEO staff at Reading); for the final proposal stage, at least one co-supervisor must belong to ECMWF and/or the Met Office and/or NCAS.

Following the receipt of project EoIs and student applications, we will first panel interview and shortlist a student cohort and then undertake a project matching exercise following individual supervisor and candidate meetings (please see indicative timeline below).
