The 15-year plan for ECMWF@UoR

In essence: the University of Reading is to fund a new £30 million, 15-year research programme, if ECMWF moves to a new building on Whiteknights Campus.

New investments in areas of research that are of mutually high strategic priority for both ECMWF and UoR, notably to help tackle some of the longer-term and really difficult challenges in ECMWF’s future modelling and forecasting work.

The Programme currently envisages three principal types of activity:

Sustained research posts, to enable deep and enduring work to help improve the ECMWF core model. Four posts, each for 15 years.

UoR-ECMWF Fellowship Programme, to enable fundamental research where it is urgently needed to solve the next decade’s medium-range forecasting challenges. Ten 5-year Fellows, each with a 3-year researcher.

UoR-ECMWF Doctoral Training Programme. One hundred 3-year PhDs, spread over 15 years.
